Motivation

In recent years the Chinese automotive industry has not only experienced rapid sales growth, but also a huge leap in product quality. Within a short period of time Chinese OEMs have changed from copying international designs to developing their own style and innovative concepts. At the Xuanyuan Award we experienced this development first-hand through over 120 nominees in the last four years. Improved product quality does not only lead to better cars, it is also an important indicator when assessing the development and production competence of an OEM. Western companies spend large amounts of money to build-up and maintain the in-house vehicle evaluation competency by assessing vehicles. Only by getting comparable qualitative and quantitative input from professional test drivers, OEMs are able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of vehicles and later on make the right decisions in development. Vehicle assessments are such an integral part of western automotive industry culture, that even automotive magazines such as Auto Motor & Sport go to great lengths to provide unbiased professional test results. As an award focused on OEM competency it comes as no surprise, that we are continuously thinking about a way on how to improve our vehicle assessment. We have carried out the assessment focusing on the first level characteristics and the results and western-versus-Chinese comparisons were well received by the OEMs. This year we added in-depth evaluation on the characteristics reflecting market and industry focus: interior perception, HMI & connectivity, EV range & energy efficiency. Through continuous dedication to the assessment, we are confident to realize the vision of the Xuanyuan Award – to support the Chinese automotive industry to develop in a qualitative and sustainable way.
